Sebastian Gardner on Omri Boehm’s “Kant’s Critique of Spinoza”

چکیده

Omri Boehm offers a lucid and incisive defence, supported by careful scholarship, of the compelling idea that preoccupation with Spinoza—appreciation of the force of Spinoza’s reasoning along with a concern to avoid his drastic conclusions—is at the heart of Kant’s philosophical enterprise. I have learned a great deal from Boehm’s fascinating study, and its excellence will be clearly visible to anyone who has pursued the question of what the Critique of Pure Reason is aiming to achieve. Since a full engagement with all of the themes treated in the book is out of the question, I am going to focus (in Sections 1 and 2) on Boehm’s treatment of the pre-Critical work in which, he argues, Spinozism first becomes a major issue for Kant, and then (in Section 3) say a few things about Boehm’s general account of Kant’s confrontation with Spinoza and indicate how his configuration of the KantSpinoza opposition sets the stage for a later chapter in the development of classical German philosophy.

Spinoza and Kant on Suicide

In this paper I’m going to argue that both, Spinoza and Kant, construct the argument “for the impossibility of self-destruction” and examine how the concept of suicide relates to the concept of humanity in both philosophers. I will argue that Kant’s and Spinoza’s argument for the impossibility of self-destruction follows from the “external cause” premise and not from “the same subject” premise....

Kant's Logic in the Critique of Practical Reason - a Logical Formalization of Kant's Practical Transcendental Argument Msc in Logic

Logic plays a fundamental role in Kant’s transcendental philosophy. The general presupposition is that Kant’s logic can be subsumed under the Aristotelian tradition. However, with respect to this presupposition some problems arise in Kant’s philosophy. This thesis takes a new approach to Kant’s logic: Instead of imposing a logical framework on Kant’s thought this thesis aims at deriving the log...

Forthcoming in: Kantian Review 17.2 (2012) 1 What Does Kant Mean by ‘Power of Judgement’ in his Critique of the Power of Judgement?

The notion of ‘power of judgement’ in the title of Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgement is commonly taken to refer to a cognitive power inclusive of both determining judgement and reflecting judgement. I argue, first, that this seemingly innocuous view is in conflict both with the textual fact that Kant attempts a critical justification of the reflecting power of judgement – only – and wit...
